5 tips for caring for your lawn over winter

Jul 21, 2017

Love your lawn this winter!

You have a beautiful luscious green lawn at your Sydney home —perhaps you’ve invested in DNA Certified Sir Walter Buffalo Turf— but how do you ensure it stays that way over the Australian winter?

Let’s look at our 5 top tips for loving your Sydney lawn over winter!

1. FERTILISE YOUR LAWN IN AUTUMN

Fertilising your lawn in autumn helps it maintain its winter colour.

Products like Sir Walter Fertiliser and Sir Launcher can help your lawn stay healthy and vibrant!

2. DON’T LET WEEDS GET THEIR BEST OF YOUR LAWN

Your lawn will become dormant over winter, while some weeds may contain to grow and may potentially crowd out your lovely green lawn.

3. MOW YOUR LAWN HIGH IN WINTER

Your lawn will grow more slowly over winter than it has during summer. You will still need to mow it occasionally, but make sure you don’t cut it as short as you would during warmer months. Remember your lawn is likely dormant during this time, so treat it with care!

Be sure to put your mower blades up a notch or two to allow for better photosynthesis and food supply for your lawn.

Select the proper mowing height for your lawn. Measure the grass plants after mowing a very small area, then adjust your mower as necessary. Always mow your lawn at the recommended cutting height. For instance, shift the cutting deck higher in drought conditions and allow grass to grow longer. Taller grass develops deeper roots, helping to withstand dry spells better. Cutting heights should be raised during cooler months to aid photosynthesis with longer leaves and to minimise weed growth.

Always mow your lawn at the recommended cutting height.

4. DON’T OVERWATER YOUR LAWN DURING WINTER

Your lawn is unlikely to dry out over the winter months. It will receive less sunlight, experience cooler days and might experience frost and rain. Overwatering is a waste of time and money with the shorter and cooler days. Only water your lawn in winter if it needs it.

5. ADD A NATURAL LAWN PIGMENT FOR GREAT WINTER COLOUR

If your lawn loses colour over winter, try using a natural lawn pigment to help bring your lawn back to life!

A product like ColourGuard can help your lawn regain any lost pigment and help it look its best!

A little maintenance with these five tips will help your lawn look its absolute best over the Australian winter and beyond!
