Turf Varieties For The Southern Highlands

We grow several premium turf varieties which suit lawns in the Southern Highlands. They each have their pros and cons to consider. Ask us if you’re not sure what to buy!

When choosing a lawn variety, these are the factors to think about:

  • Shade – how much shade will your lawn get and how much sun does it need to survive?
  • Water & drought – how much watering do you want to do? Some grasses do OK with minimal water.
  • Maintenance – some varieties require more mowing and edging.
  • Fertilising – for optimal growth and green, most varieties need fertilising every now and then. But how much?
  • Wear & tear – do you have kids, dogs, or generally a lot of foot traffic on the lawn? Some handle this better than others.
  • Weed resistance – will your grass out-compete weeds?
  • Disease resistance – how susceptible will the variety be to lawn diseases and fungus?
  • Budget – not all varieties cost the same. But bear in mind you will get a better performing lawn with a higher budget.

Eureka Kikuyu

If you’re looking for a budget turf alternative for the Southern Highlands, be sure to look at Eureka Kikuyu.

Bred to be the best kikuyu possible, Eureka Kikuyu is a vigorous grower that’s less prone to disease compared to older varieties.

Preferring a sunny aspect, Eureka Kikuyu won’t do well in shade but if given enough sunlight, it will grow rapidly with dense coverage. This can be great to repair areas suffering from erosion.

Able to withstand a high amount of traffic and wear, Eureka Kikuyu is a good economical option for rental properties or people with young families or pets.

Given that it’s the cheapest option on the market, Eureka Kikuyu does have its downsides. You’ll need to invest more time into mowing and maintaining this variety than you would compare to our premium varieties such as Sir Walter Buffalo and Sir Grange.

Benefits

  • Grows rapidly
  • Able to withstand a high volume of traffic and wear
  • Self repair quickly
  • Great soil erosion control option
  • Drought tolerant
  • Cheapest turf variety available
  • Comes with a 10 year product warranty

Considerations

  • Requires more time to be invested into lawn care activities such as mowing, watering and weeding
  • Tends to invade surrounding areas if not maintained
  • Won’t survive in shade, this variety needs full sun
